The Great is a collaboration between Emily Current and Merritt Elliott, and if those names sound familiar it’s because they are: the duo also founded OG denim brand Current/Elliott.
Back in 2012 when the founders left their eponymous brand, they said they were “thrilled for our next chapter in design and to perpetuate our whimsical Americana aesthetic across multiple categories.”
Seven years later, they have nailed “whimsical Americana.” The fall 2019 collection takes me back to my childhood in Pennsylvania, where we were not at the forefront of fashion but looked awesome because it was the seventies. Floral dresses with a nubby sweater, high-waist jeans with boots, ruffled blouses—even our sweats looked cool. The palette favored red white and blue thanks to our country’s 1976 bicentennial, and The Great nods to that somehow cool version of patriotism in its fall 2019 collection.
These outfits make me feel optimistic and hopeful in a way I should probably not ascribe to clothing, but here we are. Can an outfit buy a taste of being 11-years-old in late August when the nights start to get cool and school is starting soon and there’s so much potential in the world?
I’m willing to give it a try.
